The Department of Communication Studies at UNC Charlotte offers students a range of programs that explore the role of communication in our lives and help prepare students to be better communicators in an increasingly information-driven world. In addition to a wide variety of courses, the department offers five curricular programs: An M.A. in Communication, a Graduate Certificate in Communication, a B.A. in Communication Studies, a Minor in Communication Studies, and a Minor in Journalism.
The B.A. in Communication Studies offers five tracks of study: Health Communication, Mass Media, Organizational Communication, Public Relations and Public Advocacy. In addition, students in the Public Relations track of the major may elect to earn a Certificate in International Public Relations. At the graduate level, the department offers an International Exchange Program in International Public Relations. The department also seeks to provide students with a variety of extracurricular and co-curricular experiences. Three organizations are currently supported through the department. Lambda Pi Eta is an honorary society that provides further programs and opportunities to learn about communication. The Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), affiliated with the Public Relations Society of America, provides meetings, workshops, and events that develop the student’s understanding of the public relations profession. The Forensic Team provides students with opportunities to engage in intercollegiate competitive speech and debate. The department also has an active internship program, with undergraduate interns working at many of the top corporations, agencies, television stations, and radio stations in the metropolitan area.
The Department of Communication Studies offers several scholarships and assistantships. Graduate students enrolled in the Masters program are eligible to apply for graduate assistantships. Walter and Rebecca Roberts Scholarships are available to support the study of non-traditional undergraduate students enrolled in the B.A. program. The Cy Bahakel Scholarship is given in support of an outstanding student-athlete in the Communication Studies program. The Brycie-Baber Scholarship is awarded in support of students who evidence academic excellence and who participate in forensics. |
