Charlotte Sister Cities
The mission of Charlotte Sister Cities mirrors that of Sister Cities International: to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation – one individual and one community at a time. Charlotte joins approximately 700 cities from all 50 states that have Sister City relationships with more than 1,700 cities in 134 countries around the world.
Of Charlotte’s seven Sister Cities, Baoding is our only Sister City in Asia. This relationship became official on Sept. 29, 1987, after two years of citizen-to-citizen exploratory visits.
To see a summary of the main exchanges over these years, see the Relationship Timeline. To read some articles about the exchanges from The Charlotte Observer files, see the stories below. To view photos from these events, see History in Photos.
We thank UNC Charlotte’s College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Communication Studies for supporting this experimental course. We thank the students who dared to sail in uncharted waters to learn new skills and create a lasting diplomatic document for the City of Charlotte. And we thank Ms. Zhao and the Baoding students who corresponded with students in Charlotte for making the project more interesting and personal. Please see the Credits section for many other people and institutions who helped to make this site a reality.
We hope that the citizens of Baoding enjoy learning about Charlotte. We look forward to many more years of cultural, educational, business and civic exchanges.
